July 2013 Bowron Lakes Canoe Circuit.\u00a0 <\/strong>Twelve members of Troop 139 traveled to northern British Columbia to paddle the Bowron Lakes Canoe Circuit.\u00a0 The canoe circuit consists of 12 lakes interconnected by waterways and portages for a total length of 116 km.\u00a0 During the 8 day trip, scouts saw a variety of wildlife including moose, bears, bald eagles and pine martens.\u00a0 It was an experience of a lifetime!<\/p>\n Scouts navigate the waterway to Bowron Lake<\/p><\/div>\n Another spectacular day on the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit!<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n December 2012 Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum.\u00a0 <\/strong>What a great weekend!\u00a0\u00a0Saturday consisted of completing the Aviation Merit Badge, followed by a tour of the Evergreen Aviation Museum.\u00a0 The scouts then went to the Wings and Waves indoor water park\u00a0for a few hours, before returning for a private tour of the Space Museum.<\/p>\n Scouts with the SR-71 Blackbird<\/p><\/div>\n October 2012 Webelos Woods.\u00a0 <\/strong>Troop 139 participated in Webelos Woods near La Pine.\u00a0 This outing consisted of many of the Central Oregon Boy Scout Troops as well as many of the Webelos.\u00a0 Troop 139 set up an orienteering course and taught Webelos, Scouts and Adults orienteering basics.<\/p>\n September 7-9 Broken Top. <\/strong>This months outing consisted of backpacking into Rim and Tam Lakes on Friday after school, then climbing Broken Top Mountain on Saturday.\u00a0 Weather was great and climbing good.<\/p>\n August 17-19 Float Trip.\u00a0<\/strong> Troop 139 ended the summer with a campout and river float trip near Stayton, Oregon!<\/p>\n July 7-24, 2012 Philmont Scout Ranch.\u00a0 <\/strong>Troop 139 had 8 scouts and 4 adults attend a 12-day, 100-mile backpacking trip at the Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico.\u00a0 This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of us.\u00a0 We enjoyed climbing the Tooth of Time and Mt. Background<\/strong><\/p>\n July 8-14, 2012 Camp Makualla.\u00a0 <\/strong>Scouts from Troop 139 attended Camp Makualla Boy Scout Camp to work on advancement and partake in the outdoor activities.\u00a0 Fun was had by all that attended!\u00a0<\/p>\n June 15-17, 2012 Lava Beds National Monument.\u00a0 <\/strong>Our troops second annual caving trip!\u00a0 All of those in attendance managed to wiggle through a really tight squeeze in the Catacomb Cave.\u00a0 We were underground for over 4 hours in ONE cave!<\/p>\n May 11-13, 2012 Spring Camp-o-ree.\u00a0 <\/strong>Troop 139 attended the Fremont District Spring Camp-o-ree at LaPine State Park.\u00a0 Our troop provided an orienteering course for scouts as our activity.<\/p>\n April 27-29, 2012 Whychus Creek Restoration.\u00a0 <\/strong>This months campout was used to perform a restoration project in the Whychus Creek Wild and Scenic Area.\u00a0 See Community Service projects for more info.<\/p>\n March 9-11, 2012 Whychus Creek Campout.\u00a0 <\/strong>This months campout was close to home as it was the weekend after finals and at the beginning of spring sports season.\u00a0 We had beautiful weather on Friday and Saturday.\u00a0 Saturday morning we planned on hiking an 8 mile loop through the Whychus Creek Wild and Scenic area with a log crossing of the creek at each end.\u00a0 When we got to the upper end, the only one able to negotiate the log crossing was a local Bobcat.\u00a0 We retraced our path and had a great day.<\/p>\n February 21, 2012 Bend Rock Gym.\u00a0 <\/strong>Troop 139 met for their regular Tuesday meeting and headed to Bend for some indoor rock climbing!\u00a0 It was fun to boulder and get some of the new scouts up on the big wall.<\/p>\n January 29-31,2012 Freeze-o-ree.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Troop 139 hosted the annual Fremont District Freeze-o-ree (Winter Camp) at Three Creeks Sno Park.\u00a0 It was attended by over 200 scouts and adult leaders.\u00a0 The theme for the event was the 2012\u00a0Winter Games.\u00a0 We provided a decathlon of games consisting of snowshoe races, fire building contest, trivia relay, 5-legged relay, XC ski race, orienteering, geocaching, chili contest, best camp award\u00a0and the final sled race.\u00a0 Troop 139 constructed a sled from sticks and lashings and finished a respectable 4th place.\u00a0 The event finished off Saturday night with medals given on a podium\u00a0in front of a bon-fire that\u00a0anyone would be proud of!\u00a0<\/p>\n December 2-4, 2011 – Coast Campout.<\/strong>\u00a0 Spent the weekend at Beverly Beach State Park, just north of Newport,Oregon.\u00a0 After a cold first night of camping, we played on the beach, then went geocaching at the State Park.\u00a0 In the afternoon, we visited the Hatfield Marine Science Center, then returned to camp for some burgers and hot dogs!\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0 October 2011\u00a0– Webelos Woods.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Troop 139 taught Webelos flag etiquette including how to raise and lower a flag, and proper folding techniques.\u00a0 We then provided a flag retirement ceremony for all the Boy Scouts and Webelos at the closing of the Saturday night campfire.<\/p>\n September 23-24, 2011 – Camp Lake & Middle Sister<\/strong>.\u00a0 Friday after school we backpacked into the Three Sisters Wilderness area towards Camp Lake, situated between South and Middle Sister.\u00a0 Saturday morning, we rose, ate and climbed Middle Sister under beautiful skies.\u00a0 The scouts descended through scree slopes and snowfields back to the Chambers Lake area, and hiked back to camp near Whychus Creek where we backpacked out to the trailhead.<\/p>\n \u00a0 \u00a0 August 23, 2011 \u2013 Smith Rocks.<\/strong>\u00a0 Our weekly \u201cmeeting\u201d consisted of heading out to Smith Rocks to work on climbing skills.\u00a0 We met climbing guru Rick Krause who had set up several top rope climbs for everyone to try out.\u00a0\u00a0 The fun continued until the sun went down!<\/p>\n \u00a0 \u00a0 August 12, 2011 \u2013 Sherpa Trek #1.<\/strong>\u00a0 Several scouts packed food and gear into the Three Sisters Wilderness Area for an older couple who was backpacking for the weekend.\u00a0 The hike was about 10 miles round trip in 4 hours, and included some off trail route finding.<\/p>\n August 9, 2011 \u2013 Sisters Boulder Day.<\/strong>\u00a0 Our weekly \u201cmeeting\u201d consisted of heading out to the Sisters Boulder Climbing Area.\u00a0 Scouts took turns on a technical climb while others bouldered, played amongst the rocks and had a BBQ.\u00a0\u00a0 The fun continued until the sun went down!\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0July 22-24, 2011 \u2013 Golden Lakes Backpacking Trip<\/strong>.\u00a0 For the troops\u2019 first official backpacking trip we headed into the mountains between South Sister and Broken Top.\u00a0 The last mile of trail was buried in snow, but the camping was awesome.<\/p>\n \u00a0 July 15-16, 2011 \u2013 Smith Rocks.<\/strong>\u00a0 This climbing weekend found us at Smith Rocks.\u00a0 Our climbing \u201cguide\u201d was Rick Krause fromMadras, who is the climbing instructor\/guru for the Boy Scouts in thePacific Northwest.\u00a0 Weather was the key for the day, as it rained off and on, but in between we had some excellent climbing!<\/p>\n \u00a0 July 7, 2011 \u2013 Black Butte Hike.<\/strong>\u00a0 This wasn\u2019t your ordinary hike up Black Butte!\u00a0 The scouts started on Road 14 near Camp Sherman and backpacked up the historic Black Butte trail.\u00a0 The total climb is about 3,300 ft in just over 5 miles.\u00a0 In addition, scouts planning on going to Philmont in 2012 were required to carry a 25 lb pack!\u00a0 June 24-July 5, 2011 \u2013 Catalina Island Summer Camp<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ten Scouts and five adults traveled to Catalina Island in Southern California for a summer adventure at Camp Emerald Bay.\u00a0 Each Scout earned various merit badges including sailing, boating, or scuba diving.\u00a0 The weather was perfect with temperatures in the mid-70\u2019s all week.\u00a0 Part of the adventure included a fun day at Magic Mountain to ride all the best roller coasters in the world! On the drive home, the Scouts stayed in San Francisco over the 4th<\/sup> of July.\u00a0 They camped at the Presidio and went to Pier 39 for an awesome fireworks display.\u00a0 It was a great adventure!!<\/p>\n June 20-25, 2011 \u2013 NYLT<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ethan and Andrew attended the National Youth Leadership Training camp atCampMcLoughlin in southernOregon.\u00a0 This week is intended to educate scouts on different leadership techniques.<\/p>\n June 10-12, 2011 \u2013 Caving Campout.<\/strong>\u00a0 This campout was held at the Lava Beds National Monument in northern California, just south of Klamath Falls.\u00a0 There are over 700 lava tube caves in the area.\u00a0 The scouts stuck to the common developed caves, including the Catacombs which travels nearly 1 mile underground with clearance down to 1 foot! \u00a0On Saturday morning, the scouts also did a 10-mile backpacking hike to prepare for Philmont in 2012.<\/p>\n May 20-22, 2011 – BSA District Spring Camporee.<\/strong>\u00a0 District Camporee is a great time for scouts to interact with other troops.\u00a0 More than 20 troops participated in the Camporee and it was our first as a new troop!\u00a0 This years event was held atLaPineState Park.\u00a0 As a new troop, we made our presence known.\u00a0 Troop 139 received a second place award in the gateway competition!\u00a0 We also placed first, second and third in troop competitions which included a first aid relay, knot tying competition and other scout skills.\u00a0 The \u201cOld Goat\u201d patrol took third place in the dutch oven cook-off with a Turkish stew!\u00a0 We even had scouts from other troops that wanted to join ours!
